As we present Atlas Era Strange Tales Vol. 6, a pinpoint of light is visible at the end of the Strange Tales tunnel. The nine issues reprinted here, #49-57, take us to within a stone’s throw (two single issues) of the Atlas implosion, the distributor collapse and massive title-count reduction which occurred in this title after issue #59. The next volume in this series, Vol. 7, will showcase these final two issues as well as seven post-implosion inventory issues, taking us right up to the pre-hero debuts of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko in this title, starting with issue #67 (Feb. ’59) in the long anticipated Vol. 8.

With that excitement before us, let’s stay firmly planted in the present and take a look at Strange Tales #49-57. Four names we’ve not seen before in these volumes will be encountered and a real treat is in store for cover aficionados—eight of the nine covers come from the beautiful lushness of Bill Everett’s brush! All issues feature six stories, five four-pagers and a three-page story. Script credits include 10 stories by Carl Wessler and one story by a scribe never heard from before, giving us 11 script credits out of 54 stories (20%) properly assigned. As previously seen, post-Code restrictions frequently watered down the stories’ subject matter, but writers were learning to get around this handicap and craft some compelling stories.
